What is Khanmigo?
Developed by Khan Academy in close collaboration with OpenAI, Khanmigo is designed from the ground up as a virtual 1-on-1 tutor that mimics an expert human teacher. When a student enters a difficult problem—whether in Algebra II, Calculus, or AP Chemistry—Khanmigo refuses to compute or display the answer. Instead, it asks: "What do you think is the first step we should take to isolate x?"
Pedagogical Architecture
1. Anti-Cheating & Socratic Guidance
Khanmigo detects when students attempt prompt injection or direct answer begging (e.g. "Just tell me the answer for my quiz"). It gracefully redirects the conversation back to conceptual problem-solving steps.
2. Debate and Historical Simulation
Beyond STEM, Khanmigo allows humanities students to engage in simulated historical debates with historical figures (such as arguing constitutional principles with Benjamin Franklin or discussing literature with Mary Shelley) within monitored safety bounds.
Final Assessment
Khanmigo is widely regarded by educational researchers as the benchmark for responsible, effective AI deployment in student learning.
